Fusing with Float Glass

Our most popular courseWe run this course as an introduction to float glass. It’s suitable for complete beginners as well as those with a little knowledge. We also do an Further Adventures in Float float course as well as a Fused Glass Jewellery course, the latter also being suitable for complete beginners or, as above, those with a little knowledge.

Your day with us runs from about 10.00 until 16.00 and starts just before 10.00 with coffee and some introductions, followed by some brief but essential health and safety.

We’ll then give you some basic theory to get you going and then we’ll experiment with inclusions of metals, crushed coloured glass and many other materials between layers of plain glass. As the day progresses we’ll have short teaching sessions and more raw materials to use.  Later we’ll fire your work in our kilns at 820C. This is lots of fun and often produces some quite unexpected results – the process is not without some alchemy!  During the day we will be on hand to give as much help as you need. For our float glass and jewellery courses there is a possibility for you each to put a small piece into our test kiln which we will fire on a short cycle during the day to help you to envisage the results possible from kiln firing. We believe this to be a unique opportunity not usually available on glass fusing courses. By the end of the day you will have made some small glass panels, hangings, and bowls ready for firing and normally available within a week.

Our studio facilities are excellent and our teaching environment is relaxed, friendly and informal – as well as benefiting from beautiful views over ancient meadow land!
